Altra lone peak neoshell mid 3.0 : pretty freaking awesome running boots
I have a thing with Altra. We go way back. Well at least back to 2013, when I trusted their original Lone Peak trail running shoes to get me from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail - all 5 pairs of them. Usually I find when shoe models upgrade - the shoe tends to downgrade. No so with this 1st model MID running / hiking boot. Built on the beefed up Lone Peak 3.0 trail shoe and adding extended uppers and the incredible waterproof / breathable power of NeoShell - this is a nasty weather play pal for trail animals everywhere.
While Altra traction as a company has never been as good for wet weather as say Salomon, their zero drop and wide toe-box fit my hobbit feet like a glove and I just keep coming back for more and more of their shoes. I would say this is a 3.5/5 for pure Maine wet-moss or Icelandic Ice , or maybe even Slick Irish Fells - but overall it is a RUNNABLE HIKING BOOT that feels like a comfy trail running shoe. How many true boots out their can that be said about ? This is the only one that I've ever tried that fits this bill for me.
Pure wet weather traction I'd give it a 3.5/5 , but as a versatile waterproof lightweight zero drop running boot I'd give it a 5/5. With Altra - the best does in fact keep getting better overall - even with material or fit issues along the way - overall their shoes have continued to impress for the last few years. I expect the next few will continue to impress as well. Job well done Altra !!
