Catskill Park: The Escarpment Trail and North-South Campground
The beauty of New York's Catskill Park region is easily seen by the magnificent 10 mile loop of the Escarpment Trail and cutting back on the Mary's Glen Trail to re-enter the North-South Campground. This is the perfect car-camping weekend destination for leaf-peepers of all ages and skill levels.
The leaves had not quite reached their peak on the 3rd weekend in what has turned out to be a dry September. Hopefully the anticipated peak will be mid-to-late October, and the leaves will truly glow with a painters palette of Fall colors.
Arriving late on Friday night and fortunately getting a spot at 8:30pm (no reservations - and it is a popular spot!) a mere $39 got us firewood and a nice car-camping spot the night. With bathrooms and even showers at each camping section, this was a very nicely laid out campground - and I enjoyed the simplicity that the car provided. ALL FOOD ITEMS MUST BE LEFT IN YOUR CAR, as there are no bear boxes located at the campground.
This will certainly be a hiking / car-camping duo that I will be revisiting again later in the Fall, as this is a great highlight hike for the region.
