Mountain Laurel Designs Grace Solo Tarp
I used this MLD custom black color silnylon tarp while hiking the New England Trail. Perfect minimalist shelter for those that want to blend in with the night. I used my MLD Superlight bivy underneath it for added warmth on the cooler evening, and for bug protection on the warmer nights. It requires some practice to set-up right, like most tarps, but it can be set-up just about anywhere and in a number of different ways. A highly versatile shelter, I often set up camp just as the sun went down, and would arise before the sun was up.
I think this shelter excelled at it's intended purpose, which was flexible and stealthy camping. Having the Mountain Laurel Designs name behind it meant that it was made in the USA, and was the highest quality. Very cool shelter and I enjoyed using it. I used the MLD tarp poles (purchased separately) as I choice not to use hiking poles for this trip.
NOTES: At 9.5 oz. and $120 this is a very light weight and inexpensive shelter. With a length of 9' I found this tarp to be good for the occasional bad weather, but would not choose this size tarp if heavy bad weather was anticipated. As I use 6'6" bags and mats, this does not leave a lot of extra head and foot room if it is raining and windy. Still a great tarp, and packs very small.
