Altra lone peak zero drop trail running shoes (pacific crest trail thru-hike)
PICTURE ABOVE SHOWS SHOES AFTER 1,000 MILES ON THEM, NEXT TO A BRAND NEW PAIR, WHILE RESUPPLYING IN CASCADE LOCKS, OREGON
I used 3 pairs of Altra Lone Peaks, and 1 pair of Brooks Cascadia 7 shoes to hike 2,600 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail. Here is what I thought.
LIKES: I used all size 13 shoes in the Altras, and the wide toe box and roomy yet supported feel was perfect for my 12.5 Wide (E) feet. The zero-drop yet Cushioned aspect of these shoes made them the crown jewel of PCT shoes for me. A nicely made toe guard, and excellent breathability with the mesh allowed for adequate airflow while still protecting my toes. All of the great biomechanics and freedom of motion of a minimalist shoe, with the added benefit of some underfoot cushion like a more traditional trail runner.
DISLIKES: Every shoe had consistant problems with the front outsole/ toe guards (very front white portion of the outsole) coming unglued very quickly. I fixed this with a mini-tube of SuperGlue and never had another issue. Hopefully this is a minor manufacturing issue that can be fixed. Of note: the wet weather traction on these shoes is average, and if I was hiking in continually wet areas I would have to look outside of Altra's line for better traction.
SUMMARY: Some of the most comfortable hiking shoes that I've ever worn. While they had some durability issues with the toe box / outsole, I was consistently pleased with the shoe every time I used it. Not cushioned enough for extremely rocking paths, but well cushioned for the trail runner or hiker looking for just a bit more cushion than their other minimalist shoes. An excellent choice for hot environment (foot swelling) or for individuals like have a wider foot, or simply prefer a wider toebox.
