Silva forecaster 610 compass & thermometer
Having basic navigation doesn't need to be a big deal. I've used the same type of compass for ALL of my hiking and trail running since 2010. With over 5,000 miles of use under my belt, here is my top pick for a basic lightweight compass.
Weighing just 0.5 ounces and easily attaching to my packs shoulder strap, this is so lightweight I don't know its there until I need it. Easily found HERE there are many online retailers that have this compass/thermometer combo. I paid $10 many years ago, and it looks like the price has remained unchanged.
While certainly not a compass able to do sightings and read off grid maps with UTM coordinates, this is all I need to know when I simply need to figure out which way north is!
I also like having a mostly reliable compass to give me an indication of what temperatures I'm comfortable at with different combinations of gear. Trying to dial in clothing and sleeping bag warmth is really much easier when you know how cold it actually is when your out camping.
SUMMARY: for at least an intro compass/thermometer, this is by far the best I've found. A+
